Take The First Step For A Healthy New Year!
I have lots of houseplants in my apartment and am having a problem with gnats. What can I do? Lauren
You are getting the gnats because you are over watering. Be sure the plant saucer is free of water. Soaking an old cigar you break up in a gallon of water overnight and take your plants outside and drench them completely. You want to be sure to let the plant dry out as much as possible without causing harm to your plant. This should greatly reduce or eliminate your gnat problem. How much Shake and Grow should I put on my seedlings? Russ Apply for 4-6 shakes every 3 -4 weeks along with your regular fertilizer regiment and water well. When your plants are healthier they are more resistant to disease and other adverse conditions. Take The First Step For A Healthy New Year!

The hustle and bustle the holidays activities kept all of us so busy. Many families, ours included, are ready to start taking the first step to focusing on our health. The weather has been so nice, but we are praying for the much needed rain, which may arrive on Wednesday this week! We have been able to get out and enjoy walking and bike riding with the warmer days. We just finished our last home grown tomato. Followed the tip in our last newsletter and picked the tomatoes from our garden in early November before it froze and put them in a box with a banana to ripen. There is nothing we like better than home grown veggies. I asked out Master Gardner to write an article this month to help you plan what you will want to grow in the next few months to get you off to a healthy start. Debbi is not only a Master Gardner but she is also a Registered Nurse and her husband it a doctor so this family is always thinking about ways to keep everyone healthy! Hope you enjoy the article!
Happy Growing!Gail

January is the perfect month to relax with family and friends, and enjoy some much needed down time. The happy business of the holidays are over and it’s too cold to work outside. This month seed and gardening catalogs will begin to arrive in snow covered mailboxes. It is great fun to sit cozy on the couch with a hot beverage and dream of the garden adventure to come. Now is the time to decide what you will plant for the 2014 growing season. So, put down the seed catalog, grab a pencil and paper and come with me to the kitchen. The first things to write are tomatoes and green beans because everyone plants these garden staples. For the next choices open the refrigerator door and then the crisper drawer. Here you will find the vegetables your family eats on a regular basis. Add these items to your list. Next, open the freezer, do you have frozen peas, okra, or carrots. Jot them down. Then, head over to the cupboard. Whether you purchase canned vegetables or can your own, you are sure to find more candidates for the growing list. Don’t forget to consider any root vegetables you have tucked away in the cellar or garage. Finally, add some seasonal favorites, melons or strawberries anyone?  Once your list is complete, the final selection begins.Look over the list with practicality in mind and make your plan. How much time and space do you have? How long is your growing season? Star the best choices and check out some growing guides. Your local extension office can help with this.Gorgeous pictures of exotic vegetables in seed catalogs are tempting but success comes from growing vegetables we love that do well in our climate.Get growing.

The Truth About Growing An Atlantic Giant PumpkinThis Saturday will be the Elk Groove Seed Swap, if you want to find out the truth on growing a champion Atlantic Giant Pumpkin, then you will not want to miss the 2012 Giant Pumpkin Growers Forum this Saturday, March 3rd in Elk Grove, CA. For those that have never attended this event before the Forum is an opportunity to network with expert pumpkin growers. Last year was my first year in attendance and they welcome new comers to the group and are happy to share their knowledge. They go to learn, share tips, swap seed and listen to the speaker that is the CA Giant Pumpkin record holder winner. They also have lunch, a seed swap, that includes both pumpkin seeds and other giant vegetables and sunflower varieties, seed auction, and other raffles. What an awesome opportunity to learn and talk to the experts that have years of experience in growing the giants! I look forward to seeing you soon! Gail

I Saw You on the Good Day Sacramento TV Show

Dear Gail,

After hearing about Shake and Grow on a morning news program, I looked it up on the Internet. After reading about it, and since i do not have a green thumb, I decided it would be worth trying on my plants, especially my vegetable garden. It was too late in the season for the vegetables, so I have been using it regularly on my potted flowers, including my Jade plants. Wow! They are doing great! This is after three or four treatments. The geraniums have never looked this good. I cannot wait to try Shake and Grow on my vegetables. I just gave my blackberries a treatment since they have started sending out new shoots. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone.

Later on, once the vegetables are growing, I will send you an update and possibly a photo.

Sincerely,

Kathleen (Molly) Fleming

Hit Pay Dirt~Hint

This tip comes to us from Debi Doty Master Gardner in PA. She remembers to use her Shake and Grow twice a month on pay day. She says “If you want to hit pay dirt apply Shake and Grow twice a month!”

If you need Shake and Grow reminder stickers for your calender just send us you address and we will send them to you. gail@shakeandgrow.com

BERRIES, WASH THEM WITH VINEGAR

When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider probably work best) and ten parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around. Drain, rinse if you want (though the mixture is so diluted you can’t taste the vinegar,) and pop in the fridge. The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit, and voila! Raspberries will last a week or more, and strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft. So go forth and stock up on those pricey little gems, knowing they’ll stay fresh as long as it takes you to eat them.

This welcome tip comes to us from Suzan one of our Shake and Grow friends from Oregon.

Arthritis and Black Cherry Tart Juice

A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and put on a regiment of medicines that didn’t work by the rheumatologist. Talking to my sister one day she said “why don’t you try 2 ounces of Cherry Tart Juice in the morning and in the evening it works for me?” After about 5 weeks I was able to stop all medicines that weren’t working any way and my hands were doing so much better. Cherry tart gets a thumbs up!

How Much Do You Love Your Plants? A couple of months ago Ellie, my 5 year old granddaughter pointed at two of the four flowers on a cart near our window and said “Nana what is wrong with those plants?” I replied “They don’t have Shake and Grow on them!  ” We usually have plants of different varieties growing around our house that are treated with Shake and Grow and those that are not treated and she could sure tell the difference. Recently after coming back from a trip my husband Frank asked,  “What is wrong with all four flowers?” I assumed it was my “brown thumb” but usually the Shake and Grow helps the situation. Then we discovered that our water filter system in the house was not working properly and was the “guilty culprit!”  Not sure if the pansy flowers can be saved at this point but my wonderful husband has replaced them with an early Valentine’s gift of 4 red and pink miniature rose plants! Hope you all enjoy your Valentine’s Day!Gail

Potato Planting Class

Bald Mountain Nursery is having a class on February 11th at 11am for potato planting.

Jeff from Bald Mountain Nursery tell us to ” Start spraying roses with fungicide as soon as they have their new set of leaves. We use neem oil every two weeks at the nursery which does an excellent job of prevention and acts as an insecticide too. It works well as a preventative but if the fungus gets ahead of you a rose fungicide will do a better job of catching up. This comes from experience of letting it go too long. Neem is a good organic fungicide/insecticide and I prefer it to the chemical fungicides. Just make sure to do it regularly and it works very well.” Stop in and see him to get your roses and Shake and Grow while your at the potato planting class. Bald Mountain Nursery 6195 Bald Mountain Road, Browns Valley, CA 95918 530-743-4856.

 Trivia: Largest Potato

Vegetable enthusiast, Peter Glazebrook’s 8lbs 4oz potato at the National Gardening Show, has boldly gone where few men have gone before – into the record books for the world’s biggest potato! The amateur gardener, pulled up the giant spud – weighing a whopping 8lbs 4oz – and found it bore an uncanny resemblance to Star  Trek’s Enterprise spaceship.

Garden Tip #458Fall DividingTime has come to stroll through your garden and do a little clean up. Cut back plants that require it and remove trimmings to the compost pile. Check for any plants that are outgrowing their location or crowding their neighbor. To divide perennials, dig down at the dripline and lift the entire root ball out of the ground. Gently, tease roots apart or break fiberous roots. For plants with a long tap root use a shart knife and carefully slice down the length of the root. Each piece that has at least one eye, some of the tap root and some side shoots should grow. Back fill the hole with finished compost to replenish the soil. Transplant each section to the new location and fertilize with a fertilizer high in phosphorus, potassium and micro nutrients. Fall is the time to avoid Nitrogen Fertilizers because they stimulate growth. This higher phosphorus mix will encourage root growth without promoting top growth. Add Shake and Grow at a rate of 4 to 6 shakes per plant increases fertilizer efficiency. Step back and imagine the beautiful new plants that will bloom next season.Get growing,Debbi DotyPenn State Master Gardner

Duke’s Doggy Thanksgiving Tips

  • Cooked turkey bones can be dangerous for your pup.  They can be sharp and potentially very dangerous.  You may not know that your dong has a turkey bone  lodged in their digestive system til days later.  So be careful not to leave leftover turkey out where your dog can reach it!
  • Sage and other herbs have essential oils in them that can cause your dog to get major tummyaches or even central nervous system depression!
  • We all know that chocolate is toxic to dogs….but did you know that so are ONIONS?  They can lead to a dangerous form of anemia.
  • For some reason, most doggys like to get their happy hour on!!  Do not leave alchoholic drinks in the vicininty of your pets.  Dogs and alchohol can be a bad mix.  Too much can lead to a coma or even death!
  • Last but not least:  Even though Spot or Fluffy might give you the “I am starving” eyes, avoid over feeding your pets.  Over indulging in fatty foods can lead to an upset stomach, diarrhea, or even a life threatening condition called “pancreatitis”.

Summer Vegetable & Fruit Trials

We had  several different plants tested by a lab this summer and  saw an increase in the nutritional value of the fruits and vegetables treated with Shake and Grow. We will have all the results avilable in the near future for you on the website.

Thankful & Grateful

As I was  decorating the house for Thanksgiving I  came across a project one of my kids made years ago and I thought I would share it with you. Let your family put their gratitude on display with the “Tree of Thanks”.

Children can help set up the tree ahead of time. On the big day, have the

leaves available so guests can take part in the project.

What you’ll need:

A small paper tree

Paper/Foam leaves

Glue

Permanent Marker

Cut  a tree shape out of construction paper. Use purchased foam leaves or cut leaf shapes from card stock.. As guests arrive, have them jot down on a leaf what they are thankful for. Glue the leaves on the tree as they are completed. Have someone read the notes while dessert is served and let other guests try to figure out who wrote each one.

Take time this Thanksgiving season to share with those around you how thankful you are for the many blessings in your life. I wish you all a very happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Gail

Merry Christmas From The Smith Gang!

Dear gail,

We want to take a moment to wish you a very Merry Christmas!  This is the most recent family picture of our family taken in October with the Giant Pumpkin. As our kids are growing, it is hard to get everyone together.  One was gone working and another is in the military serving in Korea. We are so thankful for the special times spent together as a family!
As Christmas is approaching, one of the things that our family looks forward to is the Foster Parent Angel Tree.  We have the privilege of passing out hundreds of gifts donated by the community to foster children of all ages in our area.  The smiles on the children’s faces always bring joy to our hearts! We hope that you all take a moment to count your blessings during this time of year, because Jesus is the reason for the season!
Merry Christmas,

Gail

5 Ways To Break Summer Boredom!!

The summer season is about slowing down to enjoy life and cherish the simplicity of spending time with the family, a backyard barbeque, or an afternoon playing in the water!  If you planted a garden a few months ago, you are now eating fresh fruit and vegetables.  One might argue that it’s in summer that we truly live a lifestyle that we long for the rest of the year! Pictured below are my daughters, Hope, Joy (who is back from the Army for a visit) and granddaughter Ellie getting the corn all ready for a family barbeque!  What an enjoyable time getting together with our kids and grandkids!

Our dog Duke loves the summer!  He loves chasing sprinklers, eating the leftovers that fall to the ground from the barbeque and to keep his diet balanced, he loves to eat all kinds of fruit and vegetables.  He will pick grapefruits right off of the tree, play with them for awhile and then peel them and eat the insides!  We have had to plant our tomato plants in the front yard so that he doesn’t eat all the tomatoes off of the vines!Duke & Grapefruit
This summer Shake-n-Grow has started the Young Entrepreneur Sales Team (The YES Team).  Kids are attending regular training meetings and learning about business along with positive character traits that will help them get a taste for the business world.  We have a local group meeting and kids throughout the U.S. participating in the program.  The individual kids are not only learning about business, but earning money and having fun!  To join in the fun, email us today (space is limited) at: gailhiddencreations@comcast.net

PRESS RELEASE
4/15/2009

For Immediate Release
Contact: Gail Smith

Shake-n-Grow License Approved in CA

2 Bottles of Shake-n-Grow 14 oz. We are so excited to announce that after months and months of waiting, the State of California has approved both our label and our fertilizer license!  Shake-n-Grow is now avilable through our local sales associates and in some local nurseries.  Please get to know our CA Sales Associates at:

http://shakeandgrow.com/Sales_Associates_West_ODA.html

Just in time for your spring garden!  California is the 44th state that Shake-n-Grow has been licensed in.  Whether it be indoor plants,  vegetables, fruits, trees or flowers you are growing, you can use Shake-n-Grow along with your favorite fertilizer to make your plants healthier!  For less than a dollar, any plant can produce much more fruit or vegetables in your garden, which means more food on the table for your family!  Since you will be growing very large vegetables and flowers, be sure to check out our contest in the article below!

Debbi DotySpring has definitely sprung.  Even here in Pennsylvania, we have had some warm days to get out and begin soil prep for our vegetable garden.  Ideally, you prepared your beds last fall, but if not you can begin now.  Start by tilling or spading the top 6 to 8 inches and work in compost.  Compost is sometimes available free from a community compost site or you can purchase it from a nursery or garden supplier.  Five percent organic matter is a good ratio.  Never work the soil or walk on it when it is wet.  If you did not do a soil test last fall, do that now.  Contact your local Cooperative Extension for details.  Do not use fresh manure, it must age at least six months to prevent risk of disease.  Work fertilizer into the soil.  I prefer organic sources for my vegetable garden, such as: fish emulsion, well composted manures, and blood meal.  You may choose to use a balanced commercial fertilizer such as 10-10-10.  Whether you are going for the prize winning pumpkin or you just want to produce the highest yield from your families vegetable garden, be sure to add two to three sprinkles of Shake and Grow on the soil once your plants have two true leaves and every 3 to 4 weeks there after.  Direct sow hardy crops such as broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and carrots now.  Transplant tender varieties such as corn, tomatoes and cucumbers after all danger of frost has passed. Alternately, you can plant tender crops outside and provide them with protection in the form of a cold frame.  A cold frame can be as simple as a large jar placed over the plant or a mini greenhouse made from some discarded windows.  Be sure the cold frame is large enough to cover without touching the plant.Get Growing!Debbi DotyMaster Gardener-in-training

Shake-n-Grow Plant Food Supplement is being tested on montauk daisies, tomatoes, geraniums, impatiens, roses and an assortment of other plant trials that are going on in CA, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas and accross the U.S.
We also have a giant pumpkin grower in CA that we are working with that is using Shake-n-Grow!  Last year his pumpkin was 922 pounds.  We are all praying that with Shake-n-Grow, the Giant Pumpkin can rise out of the GREAT Pumpkin Patch and hit the 1000+ pound weight mark and blow the other pumpkins entered in the contest out of the patch!  The pumpkin grower and Charlie Brown can watch the Great Pumpkin rise from the earth next fall and his competition will be under the looming shadow of the massive pumpkin!
LATEST CONTEST RELEASE:  For those of you on the competive side, we

suspect that you might be interested in a product that will literally blow your competition out of the “garden.”  Shake-n-Grow is a patented, easy to use, granular plant food supplement that will shock your socks off!  Customers have written to our company stating that they would never have planted so many vegetables if they had realized the exceptional yield their plants would produce all while utilizing less fertilizer!  Since we love contests and appreciate the effort everyone puts into growing the biggest and best vegetables & flowers, we are having our own contest.  In order to enter, just contact us and let us know you are interested.  We will send you the rules to the competition!

Subject: Happy Thanksgiving!

faith's shakenngrow
Dear gail,

This Thanksgiving we have so much to be thankful for as we take this moment to reflect on our abundant blessings! One of our favorite family traditions is for everyone to go around the table and share what they are thankful for.  We have so many things that we are thankful for each year such as family, friends, food, and a warm home.  This year we are very thankful for our newest addition to the family, Jayden Michael Holmes!  Although he may sleep through the day, he will hear stories in years to come of favorite memories of shared Thanksgiving feasts.  One particular favorite was when our daughter Hope’s birthday happen to fall on Thanksgiving day.  As everybody was crowded into the kitchen helping to make the Thanksgiving meal, accidents were bound to happen!  While making the Birthday Pumpkin Pie, somehow we ended up with a mixer malfunction (could have been an operator error on my part) oops!  Suddenly there was pumpkin pie everywhere, including the ceiling!  We have such fond memories every year that are fun to laugh about around the table.
lime jello My Mom has made this recipe has been  for many years.  It may sound crazy but it disappears fast!

Green Stuff

15 oz. or 1 can of crushed pineapple
2 boxes of lime jello
1/8 tablespoon salt
2/3 cup cottage cheese
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup chopped pecans

Drain pineapple and reserve syrup.  Add water to make 1 cup of juice.  In saucepan, heat syrup to boiling.  Stir in jello, salt until jello is dissolved.  Mix at medium speed, cottage cheese, and Mayo in mixing bowl till well blended.  Mix in jello mixture, pineapple, and nuts.  Pour into a casserole dish or jello mold and chill.

We are so thankful for all our Friends and Family and would like to wish you and your famil a great and memorable Thanksgiving!

Happy Gardening,

Take The First Step For A Healthy New Year!

I have lots of houseplants in my apartment and am having a problem with gnats. What can I do? Lauren You are getting the gnats because you are over watering.

Order your free Shake and Grow plant sticker reminders for your calendar. gail@shakeandgrow.com

Happy Growing!

Get Growing with Debbi Doty
Once your list is complete, the final selection begins.   Look over the list with practicality in mind and make your plan. How much time and space do you have? How long is your growing season? Star the best choices and check out some growing guides. Your local extension office can help with this.   Gorgeous pictures of exotic vegetables in seed catalogs are tempting but success comes from growing vegetables we love that do well in our climate.   Get growing.

It is never  to early in the season to visit one of our distributors or our online store when planning you garden to stock up on Shake and Grow. For questions give us a call and order your Shake and Grow today!

Our family would like to remind you to remember to pray for rain for the states on the West Coast! Ask the Lord for rain In the time of the latter rain.[a] The Lord will make flashing clouds; He will give them showers of rain, Grass in the field for everyone. Zechariah 10:1

Congratulations!

 School of Champions~Ask the Plant Doctor Q & A
My garden question to you is:  I have bittersweet nightshade growing in my strawberry bed. We have of course, removed the visible portions of the plant but I have a feeling we are not getting the roots and I expect it would return in the spring. Do you think we should use a rototiller in the bed or would that not work? It’s a raised bed. I guess we could get rid of all that’s in the bed but I would hate to do that. I thought being a master gardener you may have an easier solution? There is still strawberry plants that I was thinking of transplanting in the spring…they haven’t been doing well. Carol

Carol-It shouldn’t’t come back from just roots but you may have seeds in the soil. If you continue to remove all new plant growth you should be able to eradicate it but this may take a couple growing seasons for all the remaining seeds to germinate. I would not rototill. Cultivating destroys the biological matrix in the ground which makes for healthy soil. Ideal soil takes years to build.

A new strawberry bed can take two years to prepare. A sunny, well drained site on a slight slope is best. Strawberries need plenty of organic material and to be well mulched. Also they perform best in soil which has a ph of 5.8 to 6.2. Limestone may be needed to raise the ph. Have you done a soil test to check the ph? Also strawberries should not be planted following potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, or eggplants. These have a root fungus that damage strawberry roots.

Are Your Plants Too Hot Handle??

Our family has been enjoying the hot and cool days of summer. I love the smell of fresh veggies from the garden barbecuing on the grill and the chicken or hamburgers. The happy sounds of  family and friends  laughing in the pool, and the cool mist of the kids with their water shooters and super soakers.  Our dog Duke enjoys hanging his feet over the edge of the pool and lapping up the cool water. When friends and family have gone home I often take some time to swim 54 laps. Our daughter Faith who is expecting in late September has enjoyed some relief from the heat in the pool. Just as people need relief from the heat our plants need to be protected from those hot scorching days too.

I have had many questions and calls from our Shake and Grow gardeners about heat
Below are five tips to help your plants thrive in hot weather:

  1. Water in the early morning, that way water is available to the plant in the hot part of the day.
  2. Add 2-3” of organic mulch around the plants, keeping it 2” from the stem or trunk. When mulch is in contact with the trunk it holds moisture which allows pest or fungus to enter the plants.
  3. Driving stakes on the south side of the plant and attach shade cloth this can drop the temperature around your plants 10 degrees.
  4. Consider planting heat loving plants in front of less heat tolerant plants to block the sun and prevent future problems.
  5. Avoid fertilizing during a hot spell because this causes a flush of tender new growth which is more susceptible to welting.

Hope you and your family have had fun and found ways to keep cooler this summer.
Gail
P.S. I love seeing pictures of what you have growing! If you have pictures you would like to share email me gail@shakeandgrow.com
